Our team of historians and architectural historians are experts working both in the field and in the library. They have the know-how to develop detailed narratives and to assess the significance of historical properties. Whatever the regulatory trigger, our historians can help you meet statutory needs. We have completed countless archival searches, architectural surveys and evaluations, and historical context studies to satisfy federal and state regulations for historical documentation.

Our historians also routinely carry out archival research prior to archaeological and architectural studies. Information regarding previously identified cultural resources is gathered so the field investigators may reassess their current condition and status. Local histories are carefully read and knowledgeable informants interviewed so we may learn the historic contexts distinct to each study area. Context development help the field investigators determine what type of sites or resources are likely to be encountered in the field.

Gainesville, GA

Gainesville City-wide Surveys

Since 2006, the City of Gainesville, Georgia has worked with Brockington to conduct grant-funded community-wide Historic Structural Surveys of buildings and other structures in order to develop goals and priorities for the city’s historic resources. We have hosted a series of meetings for each survey phase to encourage community participation.  More »

Completing projects in a timely manner requires efficient, yet thorough archival research and our historians are experienced in quickly identifying the best repositories and resources for a particular study. Since our founding in 1986, we have also developed a substantial library of regional or themed histories (such as mining, hydroelectricity, rice production, military history, etc.) as well as archaeological and architectural reports from across the United States.

Our historical contexts provide a unifying framework for significant areas of American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. Researchers may then evaluate individual resources based on how well those resources serve as representative examples of larger historical patterns or themes.

Architectural Surveys

Our historians specialize in architectural studies and the identification of historic buildings, structures, objects, and districts. Our historians also complete many county-wide and area specific architectural surveys.

NRHP Nominations

Brockington staff historians know the intricate nomination requirements and procedures of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and have prepared and submitted numerous property and district nominations for official listing.

HABS/HAER/HALS Documentation »

We are experienced with both the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) programs, and we have submitted large format photographic documentations to the National Park Service.

Administrative History »

Brockington historians have completed a wide array of administrative and narrative histories for both private corporations and government agencies. These documents provide an understanding of an organization’s jurisdiction, structure, policies, processes, management, and culture.

Oral History »

Our Oral History Program helps clients tell real stories by real people. The exploding interest in genealogy and local history, mixed with technological advances, has provided a framework for communities and families to capture memories of their older members.
