Brockington has been designing exhibits and interpretive materials throughout the company’s 26-year history. In addition to creating work to complement archaeology or history projects, our exhibits and education division, the History Workshop, has designed exhibits and education programs for history museums, visitor centers, heritage trails, and many other types of organizations.
Our exhibit design capabilities include components as simple as interpretive panels and labels, and as complex as thematic built environments with multimedia components. We have produced films, interactive kiosks, Web games, hands-on activities, lesson plans, educational programming for museums, and collections management guidelines. We have extensive experience working with artifacts: our labs process millions of artifacts per year, and we are conversant with best practices for stabilization, conservation, and display of all types of artifacts.
Cypress Gardens History Hall
Brockington and Associates excavated the slave quarters associated with 19th-century Dean Hall Plantation. The foundations of 14 slave cabins were found and an amazing 120,000 artifacts were recovered from the site. The DuPont Company, which sponsored the archaeological investigations, also supported the development, design, and installation of a large exhibition about the archaeological investigations and the new discoveries about slave life in the Lowcountry generated by this work. Our interpretive planners follow the 5-M model for interpretive planning, developed by Lisa Brochu with the National Association for Interpretation. This model incorporates an organization’s management, market, mechanics, message, and media into a comprehensive plan. We use these planning guidelines even when we are not creating a formal interpretive plan, because we believe it is critical to create an exhibit that works holistically with the organization’s goals.
Our staff includes exhibit designers, graphic designers, illustrators, Web designers, and video producers. In addition to these dedicated team members, we have access to Brockington’s staff of archaeologists, historians, curators, architectural historians, and other subject matter specialists.
We also work with a wide variety of exhibit fabricators and other specialty subconsultants. Working with fabricators as subconsultants allows us to select the best team for each project, and allows us to have the capability to produce a large variety of specialty exhibit items. We manage design, fabrication, and installation throughout the life of each project, providing our clients with a single point of contact, and ensuring seamless design and project management.
