NAGPRA Inventory

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District tasked Brockington to complete a NAGPRA inventory for archaeological collections from the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and Walter F. George Reservoir. The physical inventory included an onsite review of all associated records, especially burial forms, field notes, and reports. This review identified 1,070 boxes of material and documentation.  More »

Brockington and Associates, Inc. offer clients assistance in starting an archival program; we can work on everything from space planning to selecting integrated collections management and cataloging systems. We help discover what is inside of long-forgotten boxes stored in closets and filing cabinets. We re-introduce and integrate historical materials and publications into an organization’s current workflow. We can assess and organize archival materials to prepare an exhibit, website, or a history that will highlight an organization’s development.

We can bring together an organization’s publications, reports, and other printed and digital resources in one powerful, integrated system. Digitization allows us to create a virtual library accessible at any time. Even a small collection of printed materials can become a valuable library if organized and catalogued efficiently.

We also offer specialized workshops and training sessions that enable clients to manage any new program or system that is established.

Our services include:

  • Records surveys
  • Collection evaluations
  • Needs assessments
  • Collection planning and prioritizing
  • Collection processing (arrangement and description), cataloging, and digitization of visual images and printed materials
  • Establishing an archives or library department
  • Organizing born-digital collections.

Relevant Experience

US Army Corps of Engineers, History Office Records

Brockington and Associates, Inc. provided archival consulting services to the US Army Corps of Engineers, History Office, Washington, DC. We processed manuscript collections, prepared collection finding aids, and completed an image digitization project to preserve more than 2,000 historical photographs. The project entailed transporting 115 cubic feet of records and photographs from the History Office headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, to our Charleston-area lab where we conducted all of the work.

Independence National Historical Park

Brockington and Associates, Inc. produced standardized museum catalog records for approximately 40,000 artifacts from several sites within Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia for the National Park Service. Brockington and Associates, Inc., staff packed and transported the collections from Independence Park to our Charleston-area lab where they were cataloged. We returned the collections to the park in August 2011.

Veterans Curation Project

Perhaps the best example of our ability to respond to difficult and demanding circumstances on a tight time frame would be our award-winning work with the St. Louis District of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to establish three state-of-the-art curation rehabilitation facilities, in Augusta, Georgia; St. Louis, Missouri; and Washington, DC. These facilities, intended to provide employment and training opportunities to disabled veterans of the armed forces while addressing the curation needs of the USACE’s extensive archaeological collections, had to be up and operational to meet the demanding time constraints imposed by funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Brockington and Associates, Inc. was able to design, equip, and staff all three labs in record time. Our service to the USACE on this undertaking, which garnered glowing national press coverage for the USACE, led to our selection to receive (along with the US Army, USACE HQ, and the St. Louis District) the prestigious Chairman’s Award from the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
